Steel Plate Cutting Methods

To provide complete cutting services, Fitchburg Welding uses oxy-fuel cutting and plasma cutting processes. When determining which process to use, we consider the material, thickness, and a variety of other factors to ensure the best end result for your project.

Regardless of the process, much of the cut’s quality depends on operator expertise. That’s why Fitchburg Welding is proud to employ a highly-skilled and qualified workforce, with all necessary training and certifications in place.

Plasma Cutting Services

The plasma burning process is typically used for thinner plates (up to 1–1.25”). This versatile method can produce narrow, precise cuts while causing minimal distortion to the plate. Because it generates very little slag, plasma cutting can also eliminate the need for cleaning after cutting.

As seen in the video above, the plasma cutting process begins with a steel plate sitting on top of the bench. After the operator confirms the cuts, the plate is submerged into the water, and plasma lasers make the cuts below the surface. When the cuts are complete, the water levels recede, and the plate emerges with the desired shapes and configurations.

Oxy-Fuel Cutting Services

Oxy-fuel burning is the preferred method for cutting thicker plates (1–1.25” to about 14”). Our 6-torch burning system makes precision cuts in efficient time.

Steel Plate Cutting Equipment

Fitchburg Welding has multiple oxy-fuel and plasma machines to handle your plate cutting needs.

In addition, our shear can be used to produce multi-quantity parts (such as material strips) up to ¼” thick. We also have numerous vertical and horizontal band saws to meet structural cutting requirements for tubing, round, angle, and more.

For even the smallest bevels and tightest radii that your project may require, you can count on Fitchburg Welding. With our knowledgeable team and advanced equipment—including straight line and circumferential beveling machines—your parts get the correct bevel every time.
